PRACTICAL 3: ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY OF TABLETS AND CAPSULES ( Questions)

QUESTIONS

1.      What are the objectives of the tests for uniformity of diameter and uniformity of content?
The objectives of the tests for uniformity of diameter and uniformity of content are to ensure the consistency of dosage units in each capsules and tablets hence, can exerts its full pharmacological effects. Uniformity of diameter and size can increase patient compliance due to the uniform size of the tablets. 


2.      State the types of tablets and capsules that must be tested for uniformity of diameter and uniformity of content. 
Type of tablets and capsules that must be tested for uniformity of diameter include uncoated and coated tablet,  effervescent tablet, soft and hard capsules, sustained-release capsules. Meanwhile, tablets and capsules which contain less than 50 mg of active ingredients must be tested for uniformity of content. 

3.      Why is it important that tablets and capsules have uniform weight and content?
Tablets and capsules need to have uniform weight and content as to ensure the consistency of dosage units in each capsules and tablets hence, consistent active ingredients can be delivered to the patients. Therefore, can exerts its full pharmacological effects. 

4.      Give reasons for the non-compliance to test for uniformity of weight. 
The non- compliance to test for uniformity of weight is due to uneven feeding of granules into the die which caused by the uneven powder flow. Irregular movement of the lower punch can also cause variation in capacity of die space.

5.      Explain why is it beneficial for any tablets or capsules to have distinctive or identifying features.

Tablets and capsules are made up of different shape and colour, stamped with symbols, letters and numbers to help distinguish different type of medicines. In the case of patients taking wrong medications or wrong dose of their medications, pharmacist can use some features which are imprint code, shape and color to identify the type of the medication using specialized database.
